Wire Identification
Before installing any thermostat, identify existing wires:
Standard Wire Colors & Functions
- R (Red): 24V power from transformer
- W (White): Heat call
- Y (Yellow): Cooling call
- G (Green): Fan
- C (Blue): Common (24V return)
- O/B (Orange): Heat pump reversing valve
Important: Wire colors aren't universal. Always verify wire function at the equipment terminal board, not by color alone.
C-Wire Solutions
If no C-wire exists, several options are available:
Option 1: Run New Wire
Best solution but most labor-intensive. Run new 5 or 6 conductor thermostat wire.
Option 2: Use Existing Unused Wire
If there's an unused wire in the cable, repurpose it as the C-wire.
Option 3: Add-a-Wire Kit
Devices like the Venstar Add-a-Wire allow adding C function using existing wires.
Option 4: External Transformer
Some thermostats can use a plug-in transformer for power.
Installation Steps
- Turn off power to HVAC system
- Remove old thermostat faceplate
- Label all existing wires (photo recommended)
- Remove old mounting plate
- Install new mounting plate and level
- Connect wires to correct terminals
- Attach thermostat to plate
- Restore power and configure settings
- Connect to WiFi and complete app setup
Common Installation Issues
Thermostat Won't Power On
- Verify power at furnace/air handler
- Check transformer output (24V AC)
- Ensure C-wire is properly connected
- Check for blown fuse on control board
System Won't Respond
- Verify wire connections match labels
- Check equipment terminal board connections
- Confirm system compatibility
